Right now, the Tunic Metacritic scores are 85 and 86 on PC and Xbox Series X, respectively, and while there’s no overall score for the Xbox One version, its only two reviews are positive. In contrast, the user scores for Tunic are 7.3 on PC, 7.4 on Xbox Series X, and a bleak 5.7 on Xbox One. As tends to happen with many new game releases, Tunic is being hit with dozens of overly-negative user reviews that are seemingly just there to drag down its overall user score.

Looking through the negative Tunic user reviews, there are two main complaints. The first complaint is that Tunic is too much like Zelda, with users describing it as a “rip off” of Nintendo’s popular franchise. Tunic has never made its Zelda inspirations secret, so knocking the game for being what it was advertised to be is a bit strange.
The other main complaint centers around Tunic’s difficulty, as the game is known to be quite challenging. While it has taken plenty of inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, Tunic also borrows from Dark Souls, and this is reflected in the game’s high difficulty.
Like with most cases of video game review bombing, fans shouldn’t take these negative Tunic reviews very seriously. It’s quite possible that many of these people either barely played Tunic or didn’t play it at all. Metacritic has tried to combat review bombing in the past, but it doesn’t seem like the problem is going anywhere anytime soon, as it seems nearly every big release is subject to it to some degree. It will be interesting to see if Metacritic does anything else to try to stop review bombing in future.
Tunic isn’t the only game that’s recently experienced review bombing on Metacritic. The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 have also been review bombed, with that review bombing effort taking aim at the new release’s lack of upgrades and price point.
Tunic is out now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
